What to Look for When Choosing a Large Garden Jar? A Guide to Size, Material and Care

A large jar placed in your garden, on your terrace or at your villa entrance can transform the character of the space from top to bottom. But if you choose the wrong size, the wrong material or a jar without drainage, your plant suffers and, after a few seasons, the jar itself can crack.

These mistakes, which we come across in many projects from hotel gardens to villa landscapes, can in fact be avoided easily by following a few simple rules.

How Do You Determine the Right Size?

When choosing a jar size, the first things to look at are the root structure and growth rate of the plant you will put in it. A tree planted in a jar that is too small will have its roots cramped within a few years; in a jar that is larger than necessary, the soil stays moist for a long time and the risk of root rot increases.

Examples from the large jars in our catalog (sizes are heights):

  • 50–60 cm: Anatolian, Vanessa and Urli jars — for terrace corners, seasonal flower groups and small shrubs.

  • 70 cm: Terra Classic, Elio and 4-Handled Aegean jars — for medium-sized shrubs and broad-leaved decorative plants.

  • 90–105 cm: Mare, Darius, Pontos and Kiros jars — for medium-height trees such as olive and citrus, or for decorative use without plants.

  • 115–150 cm: Tabriz, Tehran, Konur and Banded Giant jars — as a visual focal point at villa entrances, hotel lobbies and large landscape projects.

The exact size always depends on the type of plant and where it will be used; if you are not sure, just tell us about your project. If the model can be made on the potter's wheel and the quantity is sufficient, we can also produce to a custom size.

Choosing the Material: Terracotta Jar, Concrete or Fiberglass?

There are three main options on the market. Thanks to its porous structure, a terracotta jar maintains the air and moisture balance naturally; roots can breathe and the harm from overwatering is greatly reduced. The natural patina that develops over time adds even more character to the jar.

A concrete jar is very durable but heavy, and it does not breathe; it requires close watering monitoring. A fiberglass/composite jar is light and easy to carry, but it does not give the natural texture of a terracotta jar aesthetically and can fade in the sun over the long term. If you want plant health and a natural look together, a terracotta jar gives the most balanced result of the three options.

Drainage and Root Health

The most common mistake with large jars is a drainage hole that is either too small or missing. Laying a layer of gravel at the bottom of the jar and fine sand on top of it lets excess water drain away without collecting around the roots. Especially for jars over 80 cm, using a stone base or a stand that lifts the bottom 2–3 cm off the ground noticeably improves drainage.

Indoors or Outdoors? Winter Durability

For jars used indoors, there is no need to account for frost resistance in such detail. But outdoors, especially in regions with cold winters, a terracotta jar that collects water can crack when it freezes. Making sure the drainage is clear before winter and placing the jar on a slightly sloped surface during periods of heavy rain greatly reduces this risk.

Recommendations for Villa, Hotel and Landscape Projects

In projects we carry out with architects, interior designers and landscape firms, the request we meet most often is to build a harmonious series of jars that suits the scale of the space. Instead of a single large jar, grouping 2–3 jars of different heights together adds depth to the garden and allows for plant variety. If you are working at project scale, we can produce space-specific pieces with custom sizes and surface options.

Conclusion

When you get the trio of size, material and drainage right in choosing a large garden jar, your plant grows healthy and the jar keeps its character for years.
