What Affects the Price of Large Terracotta Jars? A Price Guide to Terracotta Jars and Pots
“How much do large terracotta jars cost?” is one of the questions we get most often. The short answer: there is no single price. Even between two jars that look the same, there can be a serious difference depending on size, clay, surface finish and craftsmanship. In this article, as a family that has been making jars and pots for eight generations in our workshop in Menemen, we explain in plain terms what determines the price. That way you will also know what to ask when requesting a quote.
7 Things That Determine the Price of Terracotta Jars and Pots
Height and size
Clay type and surface (glazed or unglazed)
Production method: handmade on the wheel or mold-made
Model, pattern and craftsmanship
Order quantity
Shipping method
Age and condition for old and antique jars
1. Height and Size: Why Do Prices Rise for Large Jars?
As a jar gets bigger, more clay is used, but what really determines the price is how it is made. Small and medium-sized products that can be made in one piece are shaped quickly on the wheel. As the size grows, the product no longer comes out in one piece; two or more parts are made separately and joined together, and the labor time grows noticeably. For our largest jars we use the hand-coiling method, in which a single jar can take days, even months, to produce.
Risk grows with size too. Large, thick pieces have to be dried more slowly and carefully, and the chance of cracking during drying or firing is higher than for small pieces. Every piece that does not come out of the kiln sound is a loss of labor and material. That is why the price difference between a 60 cm jar and a giant 150 cm jar is far greater than the ratio of their heights.

Our collection has more than 140 models, from small pots to giant 150 cm jars. When asking for a quote, writing the height and the mouth or body diameter together helps us give you the right price quickly.
2. Clay Type and Surface: Glazed or Unglazed?
We work with 7 different types of clay in our workshop. Classic red clay jars and models made from clays of different colors and textures do not cost the same. Surface treatment also affects the price: glazed jars involve glaze material and extra labor, while unglazed jars do not have this step.

Glazed jars give a colorful, glossy look; unglazed jars carry the earth's own color and texture. We can decide together which suits your project, depending on where it will be used.
3. Handmade on the Wheel or Mold Production?
With jars shaped one by one on the wheel, each piece comes from the master's hands, so the labor share is high. We make some of our large terracotta pots with the mold technique. For hotel, shopping mall and landscape projects that need many pieces of the same model and size, mold production provides both consistent results and a more balanced unit cost.

The same logic applies to custom size or model requests: if the model is a form that can be made on the wheel and the quantity is sufficient, we can do custom production. For single-piece custom productions, the cost is higher.
4. Model, Pattern and Craftsmanship
A plain, straight-bodied jar and a jar with handles, bands, ribbed patterns or hand-worked motifs are not made in the same amount of time. The more handles, relief and pattern there are, the more time the master spends. When comparing prices, we recommend looking not only at the height but also at these details on the body.
5. Quantity: The Difference Between a Single Piece and a Wholesale Order
For wholesale orders, the unit price is determined by quantity and product mix. Because we work directly as the manufacturer, with no middlemen, garden centers, landscaping firms, hotels and architecture offices get their quotes directly from the workshop. For large orders, we send samples first if you wish. You can see how wholesale purchasing works, step by step, on our Wholesale Terracotta Pot and Jar Orders page.
6. Shipping: Workshop Pick-Up, Pallet and Container Delivery
Transport is an important part of the total cost, especially for large jars. Single and small-quantity purchases are picked up from our workshop in Menemen. Within Türkiye we ship outside the city on a pallet basis, by truck or semi-trailer. Overseas orders are sold and shipped by the pallet or by the container, and we plan packaging and logistics together. Writing your delivery city when you ask for a quote lets us calculate the shipping correctly from the start.
7. Price for Old and Antique Jars

For old jars, the price is determined not by production cost but by the age, form, size and condition of the jar. Our collection includes old jars ranging from 50 to 200 years old. The patina formed over the years, a sound body and a rare form increase the value of these jars; if there are repair marks or cracks, the price changes accordingly.
